At the heart of historic Julian is the iconic Town Hall building that serves not only thousands of visitors but also residents for whom few options exist for meetings and community activities. However, the Town Hall is crumbling and in desperate need of repairs. Built in 1914, it was taken over by the Julian Chamber of Commerce in 1926 which has since operated it as a public service. Over the years the building has seen several improvements, however much of it remains original and in dire need of restoration. Specific areas include: the foundation under the porch, the front basement and the exterior and interior of the hall; the exterior and interior of the adjacent offi ce; and the parking lot behind the building.
An estimated 1,000 visitors and residents use the Town Hall every month, or approximately 12,000 people per year. For residents of Julian, which lacks a community center, a resource center or a senior center, the Town Hall is a critical asset. Given disruptions in services due to COVID during the past year, measurements of the positive impact are limited but include: (1) an estimated increase in the number of users from the prior year; and (2) new uses of Town Hall.
In addition to the thousands of annual visitors who come into the town hall for information on our region and all the things to see/do/eat/drink in Julian, the community also uses the building frequently. Here are some of the ways that town hall serves the Julian community:
